“Please don’t get on this plane showing your ass. Please don’t go on this trip showing your ass. Houston was nice enough to invite us on this trip with him and his nieces, and if you embarrass me, we will never go anywhere else. Got it?” I gave the boys a pep talk as we walked outside to the Uber that was going to take us to the airport since I didn’t feel like driving or paying high ass parking fees to leave my car at the airport.

The boys simply nodded. They were so excited to be getting on a plane for the first time, and all I could do was thank God that Houston made it happen for them. He was a wonderful man, indeed. Before he invited us to Florida, I had already worked some overtime and started using my tips from the job to pay down my credit card balance. I was determined to give the boys a great birthday, but I wouldn’t have been able to top Florida.

With the extra money that I had saved, I was able to get them all the things they wanted for their birthday, and since the trip was a week before their actual birthday, all the gifts were hidden at home. The little things that Houston had done for me thus far, like paying for my oil change, giving me money for my pedicure, taking the boys on a trip, it showed me just how much easier my life would be if I had a man that was about something in it. Just as he’d said, a significant other was supposed to make your life easier, but I had never experienced that. Life was so stressful and chaotic with Nick that you couldn’t convince me relationships weren’t some bullshit. But now I understood the difference between being in a relationship with a boy versus a man.

The boys talked a mile a minute on the way to the airport, and I alternated between texting Kimbella and scrolling social media. At my big age, I’d never flown before. I didn’t take any trips before I had kids, and once I had the boys, I couldn’t afford to take myself anywhere. I was lowkey a bit nervous myself, but it just wasn’t about flying. I was nervous just from knowing that I was about to be around Houston for the next few days. I had done something I don’t normally do and taken myself shopping in preparation for this trip because I wasn’t about to be around his fine ass looking dusty.

I had ordered some cute pieces from Fashion Nova and Shein, and I got my hair braided. I even splurged and got some contacts and my lashes done, so I could give my glasses a break.
